Blizzard at a loss about what to do with Disc? - Mastery System Preview

Yay, there's more info out about the whole mastery system. This is all very early on so I'm not going to speak about it too much, but I did want to give a quick comment on one thing. If you want to read the whole blue post, go read it here.

So what it comes down to is that mastery will do 3 things:
1. Improve whatever the tree is that you're in. (healing tree? improved healing, dps tree? improved damage, etc)
2. Improve your most used stat. (strength for DKs for example)
3. Something fun that alters your spells.

They give 3 examples. Holy priest, disc priest, and Frost DK. And what do they do? They seem to be completely confused about disc already..oh boy...

Holy Priest
For each talent point spent in the Holy tree, the priest also gets:

  • Healing – Improves your healing by X%.
  • Meditation – Improves your mana regeneration from Spirit in combat. This would likely replace the existing Meditation talent from the Discipline tree, which many Holy priests consider to be a “must-have.” Regeneration will also probably be determined by whether you are in or out of combat, and not the “five-second rule.
  • Radiance – Adds a heal-over-time effect to direct heals, such as Flash Heal. Mastery on gear would boost this bonus, and no other talent tree would grant it.

1. Healing - Yes, holy is for healing, so increased healing makes sense
2. Meditation - Spirit is the holy priests most important stat? really? I wonder how many holy priests have more spirit than spellpower at the moment.
3. Radiance - Sounds cool to me, will have to see how it works out.
Discipline Priest
For each talent point spent in the Discipline tree, the priest also gets:

  • Healing – Improves your healing by X%.
  • Meditation – Improves your mana regeneration from Spirit in combat. This would likely replace the existing Meditation talent.
  • Absorption – Improves the amount of damage absorbed by spells such as Power Word: Shield and Divine Aegis. Mastery on gear would boost this bonus, and no other talent tree would grant it.

1. Healing - oh really? Discipline is a healing tree? coulda beat me. I thought that disc was a prevention/absorption tree, what am I supposed to do with more healing?
2. Meditation - So my shields will grow bigger with more spirit? really now? that will take a good deal of changing the tree around.
3. Absorption - Wait, what? Shouldn't this have been with the first one? and where did they go with my fun talent?

Yeah, I realize there is only so much to do with absorption and prevention, but there must be fun stuff to do with this? How about a chance for my shield to bounce to a next person? or a partial bounce, becoming more powerful as I gain mastery? There must be something better to do than just more of what we already do?

  1. They never said the 3rd skill was the fun talent. The third skill is unique to each tree, allowing them to place "fun" talents within the tree itself.

One of the rogue 3rd talents is Armor pen. Its unique to that tree since gear will no longer have ArP on it, but its by no means "fun"

  2. If that is the case then holy is wrong. Either way, these two examples do not seem to follow the same strategy.
